Medicare is a complicated beast. There are hundreds of options available. Medicare agents are heavily regulated and continue countless hours of training to stay on top of the new plans.

Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, typically covers about 80% of all you medical bills. This does not include Rx coverage. Rx coverage is considered Part D or is integrated is an Advantage Plan.

After enrolling in Original Medicare (SSA Online Enrollment), you will need to find the supplement plan that best fits your situation. At this point, you will need to consult with an agent to help determine the type of plan you will need. We have agents that deal primarily with Medicare beneficiaries in Oregon. Below you will find the three types of Medicare supplements available.

MediGap:

The plans are designed to fill in all the medical gaps that original Medicare offers. The plans are identical in coverage from carrier to carrier. If you wish to purchase a MediGap plan; you will need to compare the financial strength of the carrier and the cost of the plan. Plan F through United Health will be exactly the same as Plan F through Regence BCBS. But the premiums may be greatly different. Members that select the MediGap route will need to look into purchasing a seperate Part D plan. The downside is that your doctor will need to accept original Medicare in order to take full advantage of the coverage.

Part D (Rx):

Part D is the prescription plan that a Medicare member will need. Medication costs can be extremely high for many. Even if you do not take medications now it is still advised to take a low cost plan. You will be penalized 1% a month until you enroll. many Advantage plans offer Rx with their coverage.

Advantage Plans:

These plans act much like your current health plan. They have copays for labs, doctor visits, hospitalization and other services. Doctors are more likely to accept Advantage plans since they are paid faster and are accustomed to billing traditional health insurance companies. Advantage plans come in all sorts of varieties and are based on the county that you reside. The first step is to ask you primary care doctor which plans they accept.
